Galilee gunmen came from Lebanon
Ladder used to scale fence is found
By Uri Ash and Aluf Benn
After scouring the the route taken by two terrorists who killed six people on Tuesday back to where they crossed the border, the IDF yesterday found the crossing point west of Kibbutz Hanita - and a ladder the terrorists used to scale the security fence.
Brig. Gen. Meir Kalifi, commander of the army's Galilee district, admitted "a lacuna was exposed." He said the army is already preparing "another solution that will bridge the gap we uncovered."
The government will refrain from any immediate retaliation in the north, preferring to seek U.S. diplomatic pressure on Syria and Lebanon to reverse the Hezbollah's military build-up in south Lebanon.
On Wednesday and yesterday, scouts and trackers retraced the terrorist's route from where they were stopped by the army on the Cabri-Shlomi road. The searchers ended up west of Hanita, where they spotted a ladder on the other side of the electronic fence inside Israeli territory. A small force crossed through the fence to retrieve the ladder, which the army said was "of special design" but gave no details.
North of the fence, near where the ladder was found, the trackers discovered a hollow, with signs that between the terrorists had been there before their incursion.
A senior government source yesterday said "we have a problem in south Lebanon with the military infrastructure the Hezbollah built there."
According to the source, diplomatic action is the best course, "but we can't ignore what happened. But first it's important to know exactly how it took place."
