Changes to Citizenship Laws
The majority of a Parliament committee have put forward a proposal to change citizenship laws in Iceland. The proposal demands that those foreigners who are awarded citizenship must be able to prove that they possess an adequate knowledge of Icelandic; that is, enough to be able to make conversation. This would not apply, however, to people over the age of 65, or to those who, due to illness or disability, are not able to learn the language.
A notice with the proposal explains that the committee believes that "it’s fundamental for foreigners to learn Icelandic if they are to become functional in Icelandic society".
