Berlusconi's Russian love
With Italy shut down by a general strike, Silvio Berlusconi, the prime minister, has apparently turned his mind to far grander world affairs.
On Tuesday night he was preparing to meet Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's interim leader, who had flown into Rome (someone was able to use the airports). But earlier he had another big topic on his mind: Russia.
Indeed, other European Union foreign ministers were taken aback on Monday at the fervour with which Berlusconi - also Italy's foreign minister - pushed the case at their meeting in Luxembourg for Russian membership of the EU.
If the EU was ever to become "an economic, political and military super power to compete with the US", Russia would have to join, Berlusconi argued.
One who was listening said the Italian prime minister seemed in awe of Russia's 145m population and the size of its military. Certainly, Berlusconi is loving the time he spends with Vladimir Putin, Russia's president. Perhaps they share a frustration at the tiresome debates in Italy and Russia over ruling classes' control of the media?
But the Italian premier did not impress colleagues with feet on the ground: Joschka Fischer, Germany's foreign minister, was among those pointing out the difficulties the EU has already with its planned expansion into eastern Europe.
One diplomat said "everyone not holding an Italian passport" found Berlusconi's gung-ho approach "hilarious."
