Racial Violence Flares in England

PRESTON, England - Community leaders expressed concern Monday after violence erupted between white and South Asian youths, raising fears of another summer of race riots in Britain.

Trouble flared Sunday evening in Preston in northern England following a car accident, Lancashire Police said.

The accident attracted large numbers of whites and people of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan descent. Fighting broke out and 13 people were arrested for "racially aggravated and public order offenses," police said in a statement.

The violence raised fears of a repeat of rioting that swept through northern England last summer. It began in Oldham, 200 miles northwest of London, when white youths attacked an Asian home and sparked four nights of rioting. Violence spread to nearby Leeds, Burnley and Bradford, and community leaders blamed agitation by right-wing groups such as the British National Party.

Mohammed Azam, local co-ordinator for the Coalition Against Racism, hoped the latest event was an isolated incident.

"In the run-up to the local elections, in which the BNP is standing for seats in Oldham and Burnley, it is quite worrying."
