On August 3, a 7-member group of Chechen fighters yielded themselves to Georgian border guards at the Georgian-Russian border and were later handed over to the Georgian Security Ministry.
Two groups of Chechen fighters crossed the Georgian border on August 3rd and 5th, bringing the total number of Mojaheds in Georgia to 13.
Georgian law enforcers accused Chechen militants of violating Georgian borders and illegally carrying arms.
The Tbilisi district court sentenced both groups of Chechens to three months' preliminary imprisonment. At the moment Chechen Mojaheds are in the detention department of the Security Ministry, and despite that they are not discontent with their fate.
«Just let us stay in Georgia and we'll stand anything. We'll get murdered in Russia; all Chechens end in a grave there», say the militants.
Russia demands extradition of the Chechens from Georgia. Valeri Ustanov, the Russia Prosecutor General, came to Georgia recently for this particular purpose.
The Georgian side is ready to agree on extradition provided that a complete full- scale identification confirms that the Russian prosecution has previously brought criminal cases against the detainees for terrorism and other serious crimes.
We had an interview with one of the detainees considered a leader of the group. He wished to keep his name confidential.
GT: How have you come to Georgian territory?
After the bombardment of Chechnya's mountainous region no way remained for us but to cross the Georgian border and yield to Georgian border guards.
We have many times heard that Chechen refugees are well-treated in Georgia and any Chechen citizen is granted the status of refugee. As far as we are concerned no place in the world has shown such an attitude toward Chechen citizens.
GT: Have you ever been to Georgia before?
Never before, unfortunately. We have heard legends of Georgian hospitality, but it proves to be pure truth, not legends.
GT: Did you give up your arms to Georgian border guards yourselves or did they detain you?
Despite the fact that we had arms with us, with which we could defend ourselves, we yielded to Georgian border guards of our own will.
We were coming to Georgia as guests and we did not need arms in any way. We knew that we would be charged and sentenced in Georgia but we are confident that nobody will torture us in Georgia, which can't be said about Russians, who torment Chechen militants in the most cruel ways. We are happy we surrendered to the Georgian side; had the Russians detained us, our lives would have been a question mark.
GT: A week ago the Russian side declared that Chechen detainees admitted that Georgia is actively assisting Chechen militants in crossing the Georgian-Russian border, adding to some other kinds of assistance. Have you heard anything similar or perhaps even witnessed something like that?
We have not heard that, because in the majority of Chechnya there is no television or electricity supply. But I am sure that these blood-suckers can make even the dead talk.
All humans have some limits beyond which they cannot stand any more torture. I have reached my limit. Russians have such advanced methods of torture that you may even confess to the Kennedy assassination.
GT: Have you ever met Ruslan Gilaev, the Chechen field commander, or his group members in these battles? The Russian side claims that a group of 100 fighters entered Chechnya via Georgia to launch combat operations.
I cannot say anything concerning this topic. I do not know Gelaev, nor have I heard anything about Chechen fighters entering Chechnya via Georgia in order to launch combat operations.
I can only say that Russians are afraid of Gelaev to the extent that they see his shadow everywhere.
GT: In general, have you ever seen Chechen fighters having come through Georgian territory, or have you heard anything about them?
Please, bear in mind that Russians are looking for new targets. In fighting with Russian soldiers our side suffered great losses both in terms of human casualties and technique. Russians are more and more destructive as time passes. Blood- sucking Russian generals are looking for new victims, and Georgia comes into their focus after Chechnya.
GT: Who is your field commander?
I do not have any commander, if we are not speaking about Aslan Maskhadov, the Chechen president. True, before the war there were many moments that caused my discontent with Maskhadov, but now I realize that he is a worthy man.
