What is a social forum?
A forum is simply people talking together about an issue or subject. They happen every day in Washington. But social forums focus on the social aspects of issues- people and communities are the primary consideration--and sometimes social forums are directly opposed to economic forums. The World Social Forum, that was held for the second year this January, started out as a counter summit to (and falls on the same days as) the World Economic Forum.
Recently, with the World Social Forum, in Porto Alegre, Brazil and subsequent forums (Monterrey, Durban, Genoa, and other Italian forums) the term "social forum" has acquired a special character-but one that is hard to pin down.
They might be characterized by an emphasis on alternatives, democratic action, themes of solidarity and struggle.
Generally, instead of protesting or petitioning the "powers that be" social forums have more of a sense of "it's up to us, it is up to the people" and so those attending the forum develop proposals for action.
As the Charter of Principles [http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/eng/qcartas.asp] of the World Social Forum asserts, we need to develop not just our capacity to resist but also, most importantly, our capacity to propose.
Social forums in American cities such as those starting in New York City , Pittsburgh, Philadelphia may take inspiration from the World Social Forum or other social forums around the world but they define themselves according to the people living in that particular city. http://nycsocialforum.org/
