Obama extends trade ban against Cuba
Tue, 15 Sep 2009 09:00:40 GMT
President Barack Obama has extended the US trade embargo against Cuba, despite a prior easing of travel restrictions and restarting diplomatic contacts with Havana.
"The president [Obama] has determined that it is in the national interest of the United States to continue for one year the exercise of certain authorities under the Trading With the Enemy Act with respect to Cuba," the White House said on Monday.
Washington's sanctions against Cuba were put into effect in the wake of the 1962 revolution, which swept the island's communist leaders into power.
As Obama is the 11th consecutive US president to maintain the economic sanctions, his signing of the extension is viewed as a missed opportunity to signal a further willingness to ease relations between the two states.
This is while many condemn the sanctions for unnecessary hardships it has inflicted on ordinary Cubans for decades.
Amnesty International has urged Obama not to sign the extension, arguing that it deprives the Cuban people of access to vital medicine.
Havana claims the embargo -- originally intended to pressure Cuba into political changes -- has inflicted a loss of 93 billion USD on the Latin American nation.
But the US president has renewd the trade ban under the pretext of Havana's political prisoners and human rights issues.
The Cuban government says it is willing to start negotiations with Washington, but will not make any unilateral concessions.
