MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- The leader of a Cuban spy ring was sentenced to life Wednesday for his role in the 1996 downing of two planes in international waters and the infiltration of U.S. military bases.
Gerardo Hernandez, accused as a spy in a federal indictment in fall 1998, was charged a year later for warning Cuban intelligence about flights by Brothers to the Rescue, a Miami-based group that flew small Cessna planes over the Straits of Florida looking for Cuban emigrants on rafts.
The group's forays into Cuban airspace antagonized Fidel Castro's communist government.
On February 24, 1996, Cuban MiGs shot down two Brothers to the Rescue planes in international waters near Cuba, killing four people.

Addressing the court at his sentencing Wednesday, Hernandez was unrepentant, blaming the federal prosecutors, jurors and Cuban exiles in the United States for what he called "a political show."
The leader of the five men found guilty of spying for Cuba, Hernandez said his actions were meant to prevent terrorist attacks against his country, just as U.S. intelligence agents are doing in Afghanistan.
"I regret I have only one life to lose for my country," Hernandez ended his speech, quoting American patriot Nathan Hale.
Relatives of the four men who died aboard the Brothers to the Rescue planes asked Judge Joan Lenard to give Hernandez the maximum sentences for espionage and conspiracy to commit murder.
Hernandez and others worked for the Cuban Directorate of Intelligence as part of a group called "The Wasp Network."
Using the code name Giro, he fed Cuban officials information, including Brothers to the Rescue flight data. "

I miei articoli dicono molto...cioe' sono l' estto contrario da quello affermato dalle fonti da te apportate... Richiedo..le tue fonti hanno o non hanno affermato che tale situazione era "segreta".. ti rispolvero la memoria..:
