Mr. Amati:
I am responding to your question below. The Bureau of labor Statistics is not the source of the information you quote below. We do not make such estimates. It is possible that someone outside the Bureau used our data to derive such estimates, but I do not know what assumptions or calculations were performed to create the estimates you quote below..
I'm sorry I can't be of more help in this matter.

Hello, my wife and daughetr are Americans a nd thus i atke a great deal to know everything that i should about their country.
I recenttly in contact with a statistic that i think needs an explanation, here it is:
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics out of 100 people that start working at age 25, by age 65...
- 1% are wealthy
- 4% have enough money to retire
- 3% are still working (can't afford to quit)
- 63% depend on Social Security, friends or charity
- 29% are dead
95% of all Americans retire in poverty after working for 45 years!
I have search your site for such a statistic but i don not seem to find, it could you help?

M. Amati"

It's hard to tell how realistic these numbers are. The first 2 are very subjective. For instance, does being wealthy mean you have a very high income (and exactly how high/ $100,000 a year, $1,000,000 a year? somewhere in between, or higher than a million?) Or does it mean you own a lot of property or own a big business or have inherited a lot of money? It's just not clear from these statements. If you want to get some information that is objective an scientifically obtained on income, you should go to the Census Bureau's website at www.census.gov and click on INCOME. That will enable you to examine income data collect by the Census Bureau and help you make your own judgments.
