MOSCOW -- Several thousand people, some throwing eggs and burning dollar bills, demonstrated outside the U.S. embassy in Moscow on Wednesday in Russia's biggest protest yet against the war in Iraq.

The crowd shouted "Shame! Shame!" and anti-war slogans as they marched toward the mission in central Moscow, three days after a diplomatic convoy including the Russian ambassador to Iraq came under fire as it was leaving Baghdad.

"We're here to oppose America and oppose the war in Iraq," said one young man in the crowd, who gave only his first name, Sasha.

"We can't stand the war."

His friend, Pasha, said: "They shot our guys. They shot at our convoy. The bullets were theirs."

Others carried placards saying: "Bush, you have kids too!" and "No to Third World War!."

Police estimated the crowd at up to 100,000 people.

An opinion poll released this month showed more than half the Russian people want Iraq to win the war and three-quarters dislike President Bush.
