PM BLASTS BUSH AND BLAIR
Spain's new prime minister-elect has celebrated his surprise victory by promising to bring home the Spanish peacekeepers serving in Iraq - and blasting Tony Blair and George Bush for starting the war.
Jose Zapatero said the soldiers would leave Iraq by June 30, the date the US has promised to transfer sovereignty to a provisional government.
"The war in Iraq was a disaster, the occupation of Iraq is a disaster," he told Spanish radio.
Mr Zapatero's Socialist Party defeated the ruling Popular Party in yesterday's general election.
The Socialists had opposed the war on Iraq, while outgoing Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar supported it.
Analysts also believe the election upset may have been triggered by anger over the government's handling of last week's bomb attack in Madrid.
Hours before polling began the government revealed it had a videotape, purportedly from al Qaeda.
The terror organisation claimed it carried out the attacks in retaliation for Spain's support for the US-led war on Iraq.
Mr Zapatero has promised to form a new government focused on fighting terrorism.
But he fired a broadside at the leaders of Britain and America, saying they needed to "engage in some-criticism" over the war in Iraq.
"You can't just go ahead and do things," he said.
"You can't bombard a people just in case they pose a perceived threat. You can't organise a war on the basis of lies."
