KLM 737 narrowly misses ATR 42 on Munich runway
    David Kaminski-Morrow, London (04May04, 17:47 GMT, 305 words)

German investigators are examining a serious incident at Munich that forced a landing KLM Boeing 737 to swerve at high speed in order to avoid an ATR 42 twin-turboprop that had strayed onto the runway.

The Boeing 737-300 involved had touched down on Munich’s southern runway 08R after conducting flight KL1801 from Amsterdam last night.

German air navigation authority DFS says that the incident occurred at 21:40. Flight KL1801 is normally scheduled to arrive at 210.

KLM says that the 737 – registered PH-BDP – was still travelling at around 110kt when the ATR unexpectedly appeared at a runway intersection, “forcing the pilot to take evasive action”.

A spokesman for KLM says: “The captain suddenly saw another aircraft turn onto the runway. The KLM pilot made a turn to the right and the two aircraft passed each other with just a few metres to spare.”

Sources close to the investigation have indicated that Italian carrier Air Dolomiti was the operator of the ATR 42-500 involved. This has not been confirmed by the German investigators and Air Dolomiti could not immediately be reached for comment.

None of the 127 passengers and five crew on board the KLM 737 was injured.

KLM says that, while German authorities have initiated an investigation, the airline has formed its own investigation committee to study the event – a body which also includes representation from Dutch pilots’ unions.

“[Inclusion of the pilots] gives it a certain weight,” says the KLM spokesman, stressing that it indicates the seriousness that the airline is attaching to this particular incident.

German air accidents investigation agency BFU says that it is collecting radar data and radio communication transcripts after being formally notified of the event.

DFS concedes that the incident involved the KLM aircraft having to take evasive action but says that the circumstances have yet to be determined.
