Italy’s Milan-Bergamo airport has announced net profits UP by 93% since Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 low fares airline opened its first Italian base there in 2002.

Figures released by airport owners SCABO, confirm net profits almost doubled from €1.79M in 2002 to €3.46M in 2003. In 2003, Milan-Bergamo airport delivered 2.8M passengers – similar to that of both Cork (2.2M) and Shannon (2.4M) airports.

Ryanair now operates 9 daily scheduled international routes from Milan-Bergamo to London Stansted, London Luton, Paris, Brussels, Girona Barcelona, Hamburg, Stockholm and Glasgow and carried 1.4M passengers (50% of Milan-Bergamo’s total traffic) in 2003.

Ryanair’s Head of Communications, Paul Fitzsimmons, said:

“Since we opened our first Italian base in Milan in 2002, over 2.5M Ryanair passengers have saved over €250M on high fares. In 2003 Ryanair carried 1.4M and in 2004 that number will increase to 1.9M passengers.

We share a vision with our airport partners – low costs and low fares – a success formula that is delivering passenger growth and profit at Milan-Bergamo Airport, and at other airports throughout Europe.

The new Airport Authorities at Shannon and Cork airports should take note. ”
