Bush e il premier britannico Tony Blair parlano delle prossime mosse da effettuare per la pace in Medioriente.Nella conferenza stampa alla Casa Bianca Bush ha ribadito il suo impegno per la nascita di uno Stato palestinese indipendente e Blair ha sottolineato la necessita' di trovare nuovi stimoli per la ricerca di una soluzione del conflitto israelo-palestinese. Bush wants a Palestinian state within four years

President Bush said today that he hoped to help create a free and independent Palestinian state living alongside a secure Israel by the end of his second term in office.



Mr Bush agreed to a four-year deadline for Middle East peace after two days of talks in Washington with Tony Blair which coincided with the death and burial of the veteran Palestinian leader, Yassir Arafat.

"The months ahead offer a new opportunity to make progress towards a lasting peace," Mr Bush told a joint White House news conference with the Prime Minister.

"I would like to see it done in four years," he added. "I think it's possible."

Neither Mr Bush nor Mr Blair revealed much detail about how they would go about reviving the moribund peace process, although officials say both men believe Mr Arafat's death offers an opportunity to do so.

The Americans backed Israel's refusal to negotiate with Mr Arafat after he rejected an Israeli peace offer in 2000 that would have met 90 per cent of Palestinians' territorial demands.

Instead, their preferred negotiating partner was Mahmoud Abbas, the former Prime Minister who has replaced Mr Arafat as the head of the PLO and is seen as the favourite to eventually replace him as president.

But Mr Bush said the strategy was to encourage Palestinians to reform their political institutions to promote democracy and the rule of law - a thinly-veiled criticism of the Palestinian administration under Mr Arafat - and build on that to create an independent state.

"I believe that the responsibility for peace is going to rest with the Palestinian people desire to build democracy and Israel's willingness to help them build a democracy," he said. "I don't think there'll ever be lasting peace until there is a free, truly democratic society in the Palestinian state."

In the West Bank city of Ramallah this afternoon, tens of thousands of mourners swarmed past police cordons into the battered compound where Mr Arafat was laid to rest - as if to highlight his historical status as the "father" of the Palestinian struggle for statehood.

Earlier, in Cairo, Mr Arafat was bid a more solemn farewell by Arab kings, presidents and leaders and ministers from around the world, including Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary. It was not clear how much the Cairo send-off was used behind the scenes to enlist regional support for the relaunch of the peace process.

As the first foreign leader to visit the White House since Mr Bush's re-election, Mr Blair is keen to push the Americans into fully comitting themselves to the peace process, which has all but stalled during four years of renewed violence in Israel and the occupied territories.

Mr Blair said: "We meet at a crucial time where it is important that we revitalise and reinvigorate the search for a genuine, lasting and just peace in the Middle East."

He set out a series of steps towards a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, stressing along with Mr Bush that no solution would be possible unless both sides were truly democratic and respected human rights within their borders

Bush è il primo presidente americano della storia che si è impegnato ufficialmente a dare uno stato al popolo palestinese.
Sicuramente ha fatto tanti errori ma in questo caso potrebbe compiere un'impresa storica.
