Murder suspect arrested at Perth airport
An airliner en route to Singapore was diverted to the west coast city of Perth today where a passenger was arrested for murder.
The United Emirates Boeing 747 was flying from the southeast city of Melbourne to Dubai via Singapore when Victoria state police were told their suspect in a nightclub stabbing was aboard, Western Australia state police spokesman Garry Kosovich said.
A 23-year-old man died at a crowded Melbourne nightclub early yesterday morning and his 21-year-old cousin was critically injured in the same knife attack.
A 27-year-old Melbourne man, whom police have not named, was taken off the airliner and arrested at Perth International Airport early today and will be charged with murder, Kosovich said.
"It is expected that homicide detectives from Melbourne will be in Perth on Monday morning to seek the man's extradition back to Melbourne in relation to that matter," Kosovich said.
The suspect faces life imprisonment if convicted of murder.
