34 Indian airports to be modernised
India will modernise 34 airports by 2007-08 to enhance capacity to handle larger volume of flights and passenger traffic and enable more airlines to set up operations, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said here Monday.
"We are targeting completion of modernisation plans for 28 non metro airports and six metro airports by 2007-08 and having in place a modern navigation system to enhance the capacity of airports in metros from around 25 per hour to 35 by 2005 end and double the number by 2007," the minister said at the India Economic Summit here.
Of the metros, the projects for Mumbai and Delhi are to be put into operation by April next year.
"By month end the bid documents for the modernisation of the two airports would be given out and by February end we would be inviting the financial and technical bids. By March 31, the evaluation and processing of the bids for the modernisation of the Mumbai and Delhi airports would have been done," the minister said.
Similarly in the case of Bangalore and Hyderabad airports, he said by January the technical and financial bids would be on track.
The projects for modernisation of Chennai and Kolkatta would be awarded in 2006.
In the case of 28 non-metro airports identified for modernisation, the minister said while the façade of these would be improved, the main focus would be improvement of navigation systems.
"Cumulatively these 28 non-metros and six metros account for 100 percent of international traffic and almost 90 percent of domestic traffic. Starting 2005 we would have put 10 airports on track for modernisation," the minister assured domestic and overseas delegates.
He admitted the incapacity of Indian airports to handle the current volume of 180 domestic aircraft and around three million foreign tourists.
With more airlines keen to enter the Indian market, the minister said, "We are looking at appointing a regulator seeing the explosion in the aviation sector, including tremendous surge in domestic travel."
"We are going to have a comprehensive civil aviation policy, including on entry of new players and a level-playing field. This will be put up for cabinet approval by end of January," Patel said.
