Japan to put sky marshals aboard commercial flights

The government decided Friday to place sky marshals, or armed police officers, onboard unspecified commercial flights to deter hijacking. The measure apparently will mainly affect flights to and from the United States and that officers will be carrying guns, according to sources familiar with the plan.

The Chiba prefectural police, which oversee Narita airport, and the Osaka prefectural police, which have Kansai International Airport within their jurisdiction, have already set up sky marshal units.
