SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Boeing Co. booked an order from Thai Airways for six 777-200ER planes valued at $1.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2004, according to a news report.

This is the first time Thai Airways has been identified as the customer, AFX-Asia reported.

Deliveries will be made between August 2006 and October 2007, Boeing (BA: news, chart, profile) said in a statement released in Singapore, the report said.

Thai Airways president Kanon Abhiradee said it was purchasing 777-200ERs for its long-haul routes, the news report said.

In August, Thai Airways ordered six superjumbo A380s from Boeing rival Airbus.

Airbus is owned 80 percent by France's EADS (FR:005730: news, chart, profile) and 20 percent by Britain's BAE Systems (UK:BA: news, chart, profile) .

Air China to buy 20 A330-200 aircraft from Airbus
HONG KONG, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Air China Ltd. , the country's biggest airline, said on Thursday it has agreed to buy 20 A330-200 aircraft from Airbus .

Air China said the catalog price for the planes was about US$2.86 billion, but said the total consideration for the deal was lower.

The airline said the aircraft will be delivered between mid-2006 and the end of 2008. The deal, which has been approved by its parent China National Aviation Holding Co., will be funded through cash from the company's operations and commercial bank loans.

The new planes "will principally serve routes to international destinations in Europe, Australia, North America and certain key domestic destinations such as Lhasa," Air China said in a statement.

Airbus -- controlled by European aerospace giant EADS -- and rival Boeing Co. are trying to tap into China's growth.

Both aircraft makers are trying to sell the country their latest and most expensive planes -- the Boeing 7E7 wide-body jet and the Airbus superjumbo A380.

Airbus CEO Noel Forgeard was quoted earlier this month as saying that China would probably buy the A380 soon, adding that he expected Air China to use the 555-seat double-decker jets for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Airbus is aiming to boost its share of China's commercial aviation market to 50 percent from a current 25 percent.

Boeing has predicted that China will become the world's second-largest commercial aviation market, behind the United States, within 20 years.

The company says China will need 2,300 planes over the next two decades as increasingly well-off Chinese take to the air.

Shares of Air China have dropped 10 percent to HK$2.675 since the stock debuted in Hong Kong on Dec. 15.

    Ecco la conferma da Boeing:

Boeing Identifies Thai Airways International for 777 Order
SEATTLE, Jan. 26, 2005 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] today confirmed that Thai Airways International (THAI) placed a previously unidentified order for six 777-200ER airplanes, valued at approximately US$1.1 billion at list prices.

The order, booked during last year's fourth quarter, was listed in the unidentified category on Boeing's orders and deliveries website.

"THAI was a launch customer for the Boeing 777 program and has been operating that airplane, the best in its class, from the very beginning," said THAI President Kanok Abhiradee. "We're purchasing 777-200ERs for our long-haul routes primarily because of the 777's exceptional reliability, economics, and efficiency."

Deliveries will begin in August 2006 and continue into October 2007. The airplanes will feature a tri-class configuration and be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent-892B engines. The 777-200ERs will join THAI's current fleet of 83 airplanes, most of which are Boeing 737s, 747s, and 777s.

"This order reflects our great 35-year partnership with Thai Airways International," said Boeing Vice President, Sales Larry Dickenson.
