Bill Gates's legendary luck failed him during his keynote presentation at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

His demonstration of Microsoft Media Center crashed during the presentation on integrating digital photography, and later a Microsoft product manager failed to access the internet with a Tablet PC.

A new game, Forza Motor Sport, also triggered the dreaded Windows blue screen of death.

The presentation started on a jokey theme, with late-night TV host Conan O'Brien presenting a mock version of his own show and a video diary of his and Bill's 'lost weekend' in Las Vegas.

"I got too drunk, I woke up with a hooker," O'Brien said. "Bill got too drunk, he woke up with an Apple computer."

O'Brien said that he was unable to criticise Microsoft because it had implanted a Pentium in his brain, and suggested that Gates should be played by Milhouse from The Simpsons.

But his banter was less welcome when things started to go wrong. "OK, and right now nine people are being fired," O'Brien said as they waited for a slide show to appear.

Gates traditionally has a reputation for being lucky at showing off software to its best effect.

A major slip occurred at a Windows 98 demo at Comdex in 1998 that went into blue screen mode, but Gates returned the next year to successfully show off the progress that had been made.

E come ricordato nell'articolo, quelli di MS, non solo hanno toppato in ben 3 diverse presentazioni al medesimo show (essendosi bloccato il pc tutte e 3 le volte, record), ma non e' neanche la prima volta che cio' accade...

...Una presentazione di Bill del 1998 al Comdex fu interrotta perche' windows si schianto' mostrando a tutti i giornalisti il mitico schermo blu...

Evidentemente stanno facendo progressi.

CHICAGO (CNN) -- Microsoft chairman Bill Gates tried to demonstrate his company's latest product Monday, but the product -- Windows 98 -- didn't cooperate.

Gates was demonstrating the newest version of Microsoft's Windows operating system when it crashed during his presentation at the Comdex Spring 1998 Convention. The software is supposed make computers simpler to use.

"I guess we still have some bugs to work out," he said, smiling. "That must be why we're not shipping Windows 98 yet."

The system collapsed when a Microsoft employee attempted to plug a scanner into the computer. Gates moved to another computer to complete his presentation, which was demonstrating how Windows 98 will be simpler to use.

"While we're all very dependent on technology, it doesn't always work," he said.

Gates was the featured speaker at Comdex, a gathering of 85,000 computer professionals. He said Windows 98 will be far simpler to use than the Windows 95 version, which has 150 million copies in use. The new version uses a browser to find everything from documents on an individual computer to Web sites on the Internet.

Gates did not comment about an appeals court hearing scheduled for Tuesday in the U.S. Justice Department's antitrust case against Microsoft.

The government's lawsuit against Microsoft alleges that the company used its dominant Windows 95 software to unfairly gain market share for its Internet Explorer browser software over competitor Netscape Communications Co.

Antitrust laws prevent monopolies from tying two products together to force customers to take one product when buying another. Microsoft says the law doesn't apply because Windows and Internet Explorer are a single product.
