Delta Air Lines Launches New Flight from New York to Berlin

Delta becomes only carrier to serve the U.S. nonstop from Germany’s capital

ATLANTA, May 2, 2004 – Customers flying on Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) can now travel directly between New York City and Berlin, thanks to a new, daily non-stop flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Berlin Tegel Airport. This new service provides Delta customers with a convenient link between the financial capital of the United States and the capital of Germany.

"We are extremely excited about launching this new flight today and being the only carrier to provide a non-stop link between New York, the key financial center of the United States, and Berlin, the political heart of Germany,” said Jim Whitehurst, Delta’s Senior Vice President and Chief Network and Planning Officer. “Germany’s capital city has a growing population base and prior to Delta’s inaugural flight today, it was the largest trans-Atlantic market without non-stop service to the U.S. This new flight to our New York/JFK gateway will now connect local passengers to a large number of destinations worldwide.”

Delta is operating its JFK-Berlin service with a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with the capacity to carry up to 204 passengers in a two-class configuration and featuring Delta’s award-winning BusinessEliteTM service.

Delta has served the German market for the last 25 years and is the leading U.S. carrier to Germany, already offering six daily non-stop flights, as well as a daily seasonal flight in the winter from Frankfurt to Mumbai, India. Delta currently operates daily non-stop flights to Frankfurt from JFK and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and two daily non-stop flights to its hub at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world’s busiest airport. Delta also offers daily non-stop service from Atlanta to both Munich and Stuttgart.

E dopo una fuga generale dei vettori sulle tratte intercontinentali da/per Berlino, qualcosa sta cambiando: JL, SQ, GA e altre se ne sono andate da anni, il fatto che ben presto la città avrà un nuovo aeroporto probabilmente ha dato una nuova spinta ed impulso alle compagnia.

Tegel e' saturo e le compagnie non volevano rimanere a Schoenefeld, Delta utilizza un vecchio slot avendo gia oerato da Tegel per NY in passato avendo ereditato i voli ex Pan Am come compagnia occupante (assime ad AF e BA).

New York-Berlin direct flights resume after three-year gap


BERLIN, May 3 (AFP) - Direct flights between Berlin and New York City resumed on Tuesday, three years after the link was scrapped in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

The first flight, operated by US airline Delta, from New York's JFK International Airport, touched down at Berlin-Tegel airport on Tuesday morning before returning in the opposite direction a few hours later.

Germany's national carrier Lufthansa was the last airline to offer flights to New York, but the Berlin-New York route has been seen as unprofitable since passenger number dropped following the 2001 attacks.

Germany's capital city has a growing population base and prior to Delta's inaugural flight today, it was the largest trans-Atlantic market without non-stop service to the U.S. This new flight to our New York/JFK gateway will now connect local passengers to a large number of destinations worldwide."

However, Delta is reporting strong bookings for its new service with the business class sections of planes already 80 percent full for the first three months, the airline's vice president Jim Whitehurst said in a press conference in Berlin.

Delta's rival Continental Airlines is to offer a daily service to Newark, New Jersey, in the metropolitan New York area, from July 1.

Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit said the new service would "eliminate the disadvantage" Berlin suffered from lacking a direct flight to New York.

Negotiations are currently under way to provide direct flights from the German capital to Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Passengers flying from Berlin currently have to change at Frankfurt or other German airports before making long-haul flights.
