Is Lufthansa setting its sights on Polish Airlines LOT?
From Poland A.M.
According to reports in French weekly L'Expansion and the AFP press agency, Lufthansa is going to buy Polish Airlines LOT.
The paper quoted a statement by Lufthansa's financial director Karl Ludwig Kley, who announced that due to the very favorable results of the German carrier, the company is thinking about takeovers. However, no one from LOT wanted to comment on the news, apart from the head of the firm's supervisory board Piotr Czy¿ewski, who stated that he has not heard about Lufthansa's proposition. Some time ago, the German firm was trying to buy LOT, but lost out to competition from Swissair, which went bankrupt soon afterwards. LOT in many ways is indebted to Lufthansa, as it was thanks to the German carrier that the Polish carrier was able to join Start Alliance, the largest air alliance in the world, and so making Warsaw's airport an important transfer hub for the alliance.
