Singapore Airlines watered down suggestions that the lapsing of options it held for five more A340-500s is an indication it will switch to the 777-200LR for its long-haul operations, currently comprising Newark and Los Angeles. An SIA spokesperson told ATWOnline that the airline's "ultra-long-range operations are sufficiently covered using the five [A340-500s] we have now, and long-range options were taken care of with the purchase of up to 32 777-300ERs [19 firm with 13 options] in August last year." The spokesperson added that with regard to the 777-200LR, SIA is sure that in due course Boeing "will put the option to the airline and we'll consider it at the appropriate time. We maintain a very young fleet with the current average age of five years four months and this means we're regularly assessing our options for aircraft." SIA is the largest operator of the 777 with 58 in service--31 777-200s, 15 777-200ERs and 12 777-300s.
