EUjet halts flights with thousands stranded

Thousands of passengers were left stranded at airports across Europe yesterday after the parent of budget airline EUjet was put into administration. About 5,400 passengers were stranded as flights were grounded, said EUjet's commercial director Stuart McGoldrick.
The airline - which flew to 22 destinations - posted a notice on its website yesterday saying: "EUjet with deep regret wish to inform you that with immediate effect the airline has ceased all operation and flights." EUjet requested other airlines allow its stranded ticket holders to board flights home. Mr McGoldrick said about 100,000 EUjet tickets that have yet to be used will be refunded.
Around 500 jobs are at risk at the airline and its parent, Planestation. Planestation called in Grant Thornton yesterday as administrators. The company said: "At this stage the directors do not anticipate that the administration will result in any return to equity shareholders." EUjet, which is an Irish company, will appoint separate administrators in Ireland. The airline could no longer operate once Planestation went into administration as the parent owns its hub at Kent International Airport at Manston.
Planestation's financial woes became clear on Monday when trading in the shares was suspended after the company said the Bank of Scotland had refused to extend it any more cash. The company was hoping to get funds from the sale of its 75pc stake in Kent International Business Park.
Interim results in December showed Planestation made a £8.6m loss on turnover of £4.4m and had short-term debts of £40.5m, against net assets of £10.5m.
