Qantas announced an RFP for new midsize widebodies to replace its 767-300 fleet and for international capacity growth. It currently operates 24 767-300s, according to Airclaims' CASE database.
The RFP will cover a mix of firm orders and options for 787s and/or A350s for use on medium-haul international, transtasman and domestic routes and "ultra-long-range variants" of the 777 and/or A340 "to operate on hub-busting routes." The requirement would appear to refer to the 777-200LR and A340-500. The hub Qantas likely most wants to "bust" is Emirates' Dubai operation. That carrier has become a major new force on routes between Australia and Europe.
