Come si è detto e ridetto dopo la cancellazione dei restanti 345 in ordine, l'ingresso del 77L nella flotta SQ era solo questione di tempo. Il momento sembra giunto.
SIA kicks off ultra-long-haul contest
Singapore Airlines (SIA) expects to decide before year-end on an order for ultra-long-range aircraft and, because Boeing is involved in the pitch, there is no certainty the Star Alliance carrier will continue with the Airbus A340-500.
“We have an RFP [request for proposals] for ultra-long range aircraft, but it is not specific to any particular type. We believe it will be a hard-fought battle between Airbus and Boeing,” says SIA, which expects to decide at year-end.
SIA declines to say how many long-haul aircraft it wants, arguing it depends on what aircraft the manufacturers propose, but it says “it is no secret” Boeing is pushing its 777-200LR and that Airbus is likely to press for more A340-500s.
As well as the A340-500, SIA also uses 777-200ERs and 777-300s for long-haul operations. It also has 19 777-300ERs on order.
The carrier says it issued the RFP as it is considering expanding its ultra-long-haul operations with more non-stop services to Los Angeles and New York and new non-stop flights to other US cities.
SIA has five A340-500s, but says it has let five options lapse “because of the timing”, adding that it felt it would be worthwhile to issue another RFP. The airline says that when it ordered the A340-500 in 1998 it was unable to compare the Airbus product with Boeing’s because the 777-200LR had yet to be launched. SIA also wants to look at leasing A340-500s.
SIA has also issued RFPs for medium-haul widebodies – probably Airbus A350s or Boeing 787s – and high-capacity widebodies, a likely fight between the Airbus A380 and the proposed Boeing 747-400 Advanced.
