Likud leadership candidate MK Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that he had recently rejected an offer to serve as finance minister in the Italian cabinet. Speaking at an Israel Bar Association conference in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said he was offered the position by a senior Italian industrialist, but decided to immediately reject the offer “to the chagrin of many.”
Later on Netanyahu identified the industrialist as Carlo De Bendetti. He also vehemently attacked Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Kadima party, and said that it was a well-known secret that Sharon and Kadima are planning a big withdrawal that would be “the mother of all withdrawals.”
Despite polls predicting Netanyahu a victory in the Likud primaries to be held Monday, Netanyahu’s aides fear that faulty organization on election day would lead to a second round of primary election.
