Romanian Orthodox Church unhappy about Kubrick soundtrack
Producers of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut may be sued for copyright abuse by the Romanian Orthodox Church.
Church officials are unhappy about a recorded fragment from a religious mass which was used in scenes with satanic connotations.
They say the fragment is their property as it was taken from a recording made by a Romanian studio. It's alleged that producers of the movie starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman didn't have the right to use the material.
The Romanian church wants to sue for copyright but is still looking for financial support to start such an action. Spokesman Constantine Stoica told Evenimentul Zilei newspaper: "The church music has a special character and no one can record it or use it as he pleases."
The fragment of the Orthodox mass was played backwards during a scene in the movie where masked people assist a procession revealing sexual orgies in a baroque castle. The mass says in Romanian: "We still pray for mercy, life, peace, health, redemption and forgiveness for God's serves who are worshippers and benefactors of this holy place. God said to his followers: I give you this new commandment."
