EasyJet targets BA business passengers with major expansion at Gatwick; New route to Glasgow and increased frequencies on six routes

easyJet, Europe’s leading low-fares airline, is targeting British Airways’ business passengers with a big expansion of routes and frequencies at London Gatwick.

easyJet is to grow by 10% at the South London airport by adding a new three-times daily service to Glasgow International Airport and increasing frequencies on a further six major European routes (Madrid, Milan, Cologne, Athens, Berlin and Amsterdam) as the airline continues to exploit its strong position and unique customer offering.

easyJet now offers its passengers more routes from Gatwick than from any other airport and will be 10% bigger at Gatwick this winter than the same period last year – having already added 3 new routes to Milan Malpensa, Marrakech and Split.

Since early 2002, easyJet has grown to account for 18% of Gatwick’s capacity, while BA’s share has declined from 47% to 38%. In the last 12 months, British Airways has withdrawn from six routes and has reduced capacity on a further six that are operated by easyJet.

This summer, easyJet will fly up to half a million passengers from Gatwick every month.

easyJet has succeeded by matching BA’s route network and providing a range of services at a much better price than BA. easyJet now offers:

Europe’s best hand baggage allowance (same volume as BA Club Class with no weight restriction)
Access to airport lounges for those that want to pay for it
Free transfer to an earlier flight if meetings finish early
Overnight check-in at Gatwick for early flights
Internet check-in (and 15 minute arrival time at the departure gate)
Speedy Boarding (£5 per sector) for those that want to board the aircraft first

The three-times daily service to Glasgow will start on 2 October and will bring the number of flights offered by easyJet between London airports and Glasgow every day to 14, with fares from £20.99 one way (£41.98 return including taxes). Seats will be on sale from today.

Frequency changes for the winter are being made on the following routes

Milan: increase to five times daily
Madrid: increase to four times a daily
Cologne: increase to three times daily
Amsterdam: increase to five times daily
Berlin: increase to twice daily
Athens: increase to 11 flights per week

Andy Harrison, easyJet Chief Executive, said:

“easyJet has grown dramatically at Gatwick over the last few years by offering its familiar combination of low-fares with care and convenience and has grown Gatwick to be our biggest single airport base.

“Given the range of services we now offer – from speedy boarding to the best hand baggage allowance in the business – it’s not surprising that BA’s passengers are flocking to easyJet in record numbers and today’s announcement will strengthen further our position at Gatwick.”
