    First Airbus A330-200 joins Air China fleet

    An Airbus A330-200 twin-engine jet airliner arrived at southwest China's Chengdu International airport from Airbus's headquarter in France--Toulouze on Thursday, marking the first Airbus A330-200 to be in service in Air China fleet.

    Officials with Air China said the new Airbus airliner, which is specially designed for mid-and long-range flights, will be applied for Air China's routes starting from the altiplano-located Lhasa airport and some long-distance routes between Beijing and Shenzhen.

    The Airbus A330 aircraft will make its maiden flight from Chengdu to Lhasa on June 11, which will become a major aircraft in service on the Lhasa-Beijing air route in the future, said sources with the Air China.

    Airbus President and CEO Gustav Humbert said with a maximum voyage of 12,500 kilometers, the Airbus A330 is a double-engine aircraft with the longest-range of flights.

    Humbert said the first Airbus A330 aircraft was put into commercial service in the world in 1998, and the price for one Airbus A330 is about 158 million U.S. dollars.

    Currently, there are five Airbus A330 in service in China Eastern Airlines, four in China Southern Airlines. Air China once rented one Airbus A330 from a Hong Kong Air company.

    Air China signed contact with Airbus for the purchase of 20 Airbus A330-200s in July last year, scheduled for delivery from May this year.

    Sources said another two Airbus A330s will join the Air China fleet at the end of this month, with one Airbus A319 also to be delivered to Air China within this month.

    Airbus business in China has been steadily expanding since it first entered the country in 1985. Airbus has just decided to launch its first overseas A320 assembly line outside Europe in North China's Tianjin city, a remarkable step for the giant aircraft manufacturer to expand market in the booming Chinese market.

    Air China To Acquire 24 Airbus A320 Series For $1.74 Bln

    Thursday, June 15, 2006;

    (RTTNews) - Chinese aircraft company, Air China Ltd. (AICAF.PK) said it signed a deal to purchase 24 Airbus A320 aircraft from Airbus Co. for $1.74 billion or HK$13.56 billion. Air China said the A320 series aircraft is scheduled for delivery between 2007 and 2010.

    The company noted that the deal is a part of China's 150-aircraft order from Toulouse, France-based Airbus, which was inked in last year. The China Aviation Supplies Import & Export Group, which buys aircraft on behalf of Chinese carriers, signed a framework agreement on November 5 to buy 150 single-aisle A320 series aircraft that include A319s, A320s and A321s.

    Beijing-based air carrier said that Airbus granted "significant price concessions" in the aircraft purchase, however, the company did not give the details. Air China noted that it will pay the consideration by cash in installments. The company said the deal would be funded through company cash, commercial bank loans and other financing instruments.

    The purchase is expected to expand the airline's fleet and 'reinforce Beijing's position as a transportation hub,' company said.

    Air China said in a statement said, "Although the Airbus aircraft were purchased with other aircraft under a package acquisition plan...the decision to purchase the Airbus aircraft was made independently by the company."

    The purchase is to cater to the growing air traffic led by economic growth in the Chinese region. International Air Transport Association said air traffic in Asia may grow 6.5% per year until 2009, driven by demand from China and India, the world's two most populous nations.
