Experimental Mission to Mars to Start in 2007

An experiment simulating a crewed flight to Mars will begin in 2007, Prof. Anatoly Grigoriev, the head of the Medical and Biological Problems Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences is quoted by Interfax as saying.
“The experiment on simulating the conditions of a crewed flight to Mars is planned to be held in 2007. The Energia aerospace corporation and the Russian State Scientific-Research and Cosmonaut Training Test Center actively backed the plans. A number of foreign countries are interested in it,” he said at the 13th conference on space biology and space medicine that started on Tuesday in Moscow.
He added that the crew of six research pilots, volunteers, would likely to be international.
During the experimental flight the work of life-preserving devices and the psychological effects of confinement in the spacecraft as well as research into new ways and means of providing medical assistance to the crew will be tested, the scientist said.
