Russia and Libya strike 1.3 million euro military deal

    Published 30 January, 2010, 18:29

Russia and Libya have signed a 1.3 billion euro arms agreement, according to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

"A total of 1.3 billion euros worth of contracts were signed yesterday. And these are not only firearms,” the Russian PM said during a meeting with Vladimir Gorodetsky, the general director of the Izhevsk machine building factory.

Gorodetsky said that the contract signed is very important for the factory and will keep one of its enterprises busy for at least two years, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

On Friday, Prime Minister Putin held talks with Libyan Defense Minister Lieutenant-General Abu-Bakr Yunis Jabr.

Earlier, the Libyan official met Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov to discuss bilateral cooperation in the sphere of military and military–technical cooperation.

Predefinito Rif: Russia and Libya strike 1.3 million euro military deal

Russia announces Libya arms deal worth $1.8bn

Russia is to supply Libya with small-arms and other weapons to the value of $1.8bn (£1.1bn, 1.3bn euros), Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has announced.

The contract is worth nearly a quarter of the Russian state arms exporter's entire sales last year, which were put at $7.4bn.

Mr Putin said the deal had been signed on Friday during a visit by the Libyan defence minister.

There was no immediate word from the Libyan side on the deal.

Abu Bakr Yunis Jaber, Libya's defence minister, has been in Moscow for several days, meeting defence officials.

    Keeping busy

Mr Putin gave no details of the arms covered by the contract. Russian media speculated earlier that it might include fighter planes.

"Yesterday a contract worth 1.3bn euros was signed," Mr Putin announced at a meeting near Moscow with the director of the Russian small-arms manufacturer Izhmash, which makes the Kalashnikov assault rifle.

    "These are not just small-arms."

Izhmash director Vladimir Grodetsky thanked Mr Putin for helping to secure sales for his plant which would, he said, keep one of its plants busy for at least two years.

Rosoboronexport, Russia's state-owned arms export monopoly, announced on Thursday that its 2009 sales had seen a 10% increase on the previous year.

Customers included India, Algeria, China, Venezuela, Malaysia and Syria, with air force weaponry making up 50% of sales.

    Prime indiscrezioni (indiscrezioni ):

Interfax news agency quoted a military-diplomatic source as saying Libya was prepared to buy around 20 fighter planes and S-300PMU2 air defense systems.

The agency said on Tuesday that Libya also may acquire T-90S tanks, and modernize more than 140 T-72 tanks and other weapons.

The deal was signed after talks with Libyan defense minister, Major General Abu-Bakr Yunis Jabr, earlier this week in Moscow.

It comes days after the Libyan Investment Authority bought into the Hong Kong IPO of UC RUSAL, the world's biggest aluminum producer.

Se è così davvero mi sarei aspettato più monnezza del solito.
I T90 li vedo bene nel contesto libico (li stanno rifilando a tutti).

    Ah ok, solo armamenti difensivi.

L'importante è che non gli vendano aerei.

    Riporta Xinhua infatti:

Russia to sell Libya $1.8 bln worth of arms

MOSCOW, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Russia will supply Libya with weapons worth a total of 1.8 billion U.S. dollars, said Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Saturday.

"It's not only for small arms and light weapons," said Putin, adding that the contract was signed on Friday evening.

However, the prime minister did not specify which kinds of armament were included in the contract.

Local media earlier reported that a package of contracts worth 2 billion dollars for the delivery of Russian Su-35 Flanker-C multirole fighter jets and S-300 PMU-2 air-defense missile systems might be signed between Russia and Libya, during a Jan. 26-27 visit of Libyan Defense Minister Younis Jaber to Moscow.

Citing Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport, the RIA Novosti news agency reported that Russia had five ongoing military contracts with Libya, including "military equipment for its ground forces and the navy, the modernization of T-72 tanks and spare parts supplies."

    Sukhoi 35 insomma.
