MASkargo Expands Flights To Milan, Guangzhou
From Farazira Amira Yusof
CALGARY, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines Cargo Sdn Bhd (MASkargo) will mount freighter flights to Malpensa Airport in Milan, Italy and Baiyun Airport in Guangzhou, China by next month.
Its senior general manager, Datuk J.J. Ong, said MASkargo planned to expand freighter operations to cater to the increasing demand.
MASkargo, the airfreight unit of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), currently flies to Amsterdam, Pudong, Hangzhou, Penang, Dubai, Taipei, Melbourne, Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Sydney and Frankfurt.
"Milan is a new destination as we don't have any passenger flights to the city while for Guangzhou, we are actually adding another 100-tonne capacity per week in addition to 150 tonnes of freight currently carried via the A330 passenger planes by MAS," Ong told reporters after the opening of the 23rd 2006 Air Cargo Forum, here Tuesday.
Themed "The Impact of the Air Cargo Industry on the Global Economy", the biennial event, from September 12 to 14, will discuss the air cargo industry's contributions to the competitive advantages of nations; governments and their roles in market access; shippers' perspectives on developing markets; and, efficiencies in paperless cargo processing.
Ong said MASkargo would fly three times a week to Milan and once a week to Guangzhou using either a B747-200 or B747-400 freighter.
"For Milan, we expect to handle 300 tonnes of cargo per week from three freighter flights.
"The company, which has a limited number of aircraft, is currently holding talks with a leasing company to lease some freighters," he said.
It now has a fleet of five B747-200F and two B747-400F.
He said the Guangzhou flights would cater to the big demand for space from the manufacturing industries based in the Pearl River Delta.
"We do not have problems filling the planes out of Guangzhou," he said.
Ong said the company was also looking to connect Guangzhou with other Chinese domestic airports and was now talking with the Chinese authorities.
MASkargo, which operates six freighter flights weekly to Shanghai and twice weekly to Hangzhou, also planned to expand its network to include Beijing, Tianjin and Chongqing. On the financial performance, Ong said MASkargo was expected increase its profitability in the financial year ending Dec 31, 2006 following the better-than-expected results in the first half this year.
"We achieved more than 60 percent of the target profit of RM107 million in the first half this year.
"We should be able to meet our target in the second half as it is traditionally a better period," he said.
MASkargo is projected to carry some 700,000 tonnes of cargo this year from 645,000 tonnes in 2005.
