Perchè parlare di Molisani
se i Molisani sono un entità gassosa
o forse inesistente?
It may surprise many young Italian-Canadians to learn that when it comes to speaking Italian, there are almost as many different dialects as there are small seaside towns and villages.
And although the Italian Republic has promoted a standardized version of the language for many years, there remain distinct differences in the way Italian is spoken across the country and abroad in countries Italian emigrants have settled.
Geography and history have always shaped the way people talk, but recent population shifts have also left many rural areas devoid of young people - young people who can breathe life into a culture while keeping regional dialects alive.
Enter into the fray York University professor Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano. The long-time Vaughan resident recently finished a book examining the dialect of Molise, a dialect she worries may one day not be heard at all.
"The meat of the book is grammar. My aim was to document a (Molise) dialect that is near extinction," said Iannacito-Provenzano, who began working on the project five years ago as her Ph.D dissertation paper while studying Italian linguistics at the University of Toronto. "Some people might think it's a nostalgia thing. But for me, I'm a linguist and I just wanted to document the language."
