Air France is increasing its presence at London City Airport and will launch eight new routes on March 26, bringing to 10 the number of destinations it serves from LCY. New services operated by AF subsidiary CityJet will be to Geneva, Madrid, Milan Linate, Nice and Zurich. The Dublin-based carrier already operates six daily flights to Paris Orly and five to DUB under a franchise agreement with AF. In codeshare with ScotAirways it will launch flights from LCY to Belfast City, Dundee and Edinburgh. With the additions, AF will have up to 70 daily flights from LCY. The new network is being called "CityJet for Air France." Most flights will be aboard 95-seat Avro RJ85s.
Interestingly, none of the new routes feed into AF's Paris Charles de Gaulle hub. "We are providing our business clientele with a hitherto unknown service, access to a network straight from the heart of London with all the benefits and services the Air France Group has to offer. In this way we are strengthening our position as leader in this market," Senior VP-Europe and North Africa Etienne Rachou said.
Recently, Executive VP-Network Management and Marketing Bruno Matheu told ATWOnline he did not agree "with [British Airways CEO] Willie Walsh's comments that point-to-point operations are not in his core business. Point-to-point routes might not feed the hubs directly, but they make the overall offer richer. They enlarge the general market presence and therefore also increase the attractiveness of your marketing tools. For example, the Flying Blue member who uses our domestic or European network from Bordeaux will naturally look at the AF network when he wants to fly to New York."
