    Predefinito vecchio pc.. ce la fa con ubuntu?

    vorrei riesumare un pc, con le seguenti caratteristiche.. prima di perderci tempo sopra, mi sapete dire se ce la fa a far girare ubuntu?
    processore pentium 2 400mhz (overcloccato da bios a 500) 256 mb di ram, l'hard disk riesco a recuperarne uno praticamente nuovo (80 giga), scheda video Ati radeon 7000 con 64mb agp..

    Nessun problema, pero' ti consiglio di provere Xubuntu o Fluxbuntu o IceWM o OpenBox (con fbpanel) o FVWM-crystal. Li puoi installare anche tutti insieme. Vedi quale ti piace di piu'. Non scartare subito icewm, perche' i settings di default fanno schifo, ma con un po' di pazienza e' meglio degli altri (e' forse il piu' leggero dopo openbox, ma puoi farlo diventare carino come Xubuntu). Probabilmente ti conviene installare Xubuntu o Fluxbunutu che gia' vengono impacchettati con applicativi leggeri, non partire da Ubuntu. Il mondo Linux funziona al contrario di quello Windows. Le versioni successive, spesso richiedono meno risorce e vanno piu' veloci. Quindi Feisty dovrebbe andare ancor meglio di Edgy su vecchi PC, ma ancora non e' neanche in beta (e' abbastanza stabile, ma ci sono sempre moltissimi aggironamenti).

    Ho aggiunto i files di configurazione di icewm nel thread sopra. Basta installare icewm ed mrxvt e creare i 4 files citati, bisogna inoltre installare il tema ThinBlack.

    Ho provato ad installare xubuntu ma non ci riesco.. una volta avviato da cd, quando è caricato compare l'icona "installa" sulla scrivania. Cliccandoci sopra ci mette una vita ad aprire una finestra che però 1) o rimane completamente bianca e il pc non risponde più a nessun comando.. 2) esce il messaggio di scelta della lingua ma non compaiono e non posso procedere.. e si impalla ancora..
    Che posso fare? ma perchè tutte a me..

    Usa l'Alternate CD ISO. L'installer e' un po' meno carino ma va benone. Se ti senti coraggioso prova Feisty. Appena installato Xubuntu, ti conviene installare anche IceWM ed openbox ed usare quelli.

    Con l'alternate cd sono riuscito a fare l'installazione di xubuntu senza problemi, anche se faccio un po fatica a trovare alcune cose per settare il pc.. Altra domanda: è possibile metterci sopra gnome e farlo diventare "ubuntu" (per vedere se riesce a girare senza problemi) o tocca rifare tutto da capo?

    Basta solo eseguire il comando: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

    XFCE e' ben fatto, e' ancora piu' semplice di gnome, ovviamente non e' uguale a gnome.

    Installando ubuntu-desktop, ti aggiunge parecchia roba, non solo gnome. Ma secondo me gnome va ad essere un po' troppo pesante per il tuo pc.

    Io userei IceWM, nemmeno XFCE.... Con ICEWM (sudo apt-get install icewm) la velocita' del tuo vecchio computer dovrebbe essere del tutto passabile anche rispetto a macchine moderne (sopratutto con feisty). Ti ho messo tutti i settings nel thread linkato sopra cosi' risparmi tempo. Se ti piace il nero (aumenta la vita delle batterie) con il tema ThinBlack e cambiando i controlli con switch-2 puoi avere un desktop ben fatto.

    Ti conviene settare gdm (sudo gdmsetup se non ricordo male) per usare autologin ed interfaccia minima e disattivare i servizi non necessari (sudo bum).

    PS se hai installato feisty trovi tutti i settings in gnome-control-center (basta che installi solo questo se non ce l'hai gia').

    allora.. ho voluto provare a mettere gnome e devo dire che non ho notato nessun rallentamento particolare.. a quel punto ho rifatto da zero l'installazione e ho messo ubuntu da cd alternate
    L'unico inconveniente di "prestazioni" è una (relativa) lentezza all'avvio del sistema, ma per il resto gira quasi come sul mio notebook che ha un anno di vita..
    Le note dolenti sono due: 1) non mi riconosce la scheda audio (una vecchia creative sound blaster 16, quindi il pc è muto.. ho provato a girare nella rete ma non sono riuscito a cavare una soluzione..
    2) le applicazioni funzionano bene, ma il pc rifiuta di spegnersi: quando è in fase di arresto, la barra si "decolora" fino alla fine ma a quel punto si pianta e rimane il logo di ubuntu..
    Ho bisogno del solito aiutino

    Per la scheda audio trova i dettagli con lspci e dmesg
    Per l'avvio con Alt+F1 (o Fn n=altro numero) dovresti riuscire a vedere i messaggi. Immagino che ci sia qualche questione con Apic/Acpi. Probabilmente Ubuntu prova a mandare il segnale di shutdown finale tramite acpi, ma siccome il computer non supporta acpi, devi probabilmente spegnere a mano.

    Acpi era disabilitato da bios, l'ho abilitato ma non cambia nulla.. comunque esce questo da terminale:
