New Zealand will test a new procedure for aircraft approaching Auckland's international airport which may reduce fuel burn and emissions, according to Airways Corp., which provides the nation's air traffic control service.
From mid-April, Boeing 747 operated by Air New Zealand Ltd. and Qantas Airways Ltd. will be allowed a so-called glide descent, with engines set at idle.
Speed and the descent path are pre-agreed and restrictions won't be imposed by air traffic control.
San Francisco, the Netherlands and Melbourne have held similar trials as airlines and aviation authorities seek the best way to minimize fuel consumption while maintaining need for safe air traffic management and best use of runways.
