ritish Airways Named Best Airline
18/04/2007
British Airways has scooped a prestigious award for the best airline of the year, easing the pain of a problematic 12-month period.
The award, handed out by the Official Airline Guide (OAG), was voted for by frequent flyers and it is recognised within the industry as one of the most important honours.
It will help to put to bed an awkward year for British Airways, which recently topped an ignominious table for the highest number of lost bags within the aviation industry. The British flag carrier also faced a number of difficult challenges as a result of the alleged terror plot on Heathrow, which left many passengers stranded and others delayed for a lengthy period of time.
Adverse weather conditions also threatened to damage the airline's reputation, when heavy fog grounded numerous domestic flights over the Christmas period.
British Airways also found itself embroiled in a damaging legal case with Christian worker Nadia Eweida, who was initially told she was not permitted to wear her cross while on duty.
OAG boss Alan Glass said: "British Airways performed solidly in just about every category it was eligible for.
"The people that matter – the world's frequent flyers – made it very clear in the way they voted that they like what BA is offering them."

British Airways was also handed awards for the best transatlantic airline, the best Europe-to-Asia airline and the best carrier in western Europe.
Chief executive Willie Walsh said: "The way our people responded in difficult circumstances was phenomenal. I am so pleased that we have won."
