Nel giorno in cui cerca di dissipare i venti di guerra con la Siria, sul premier israeliano Ehud Olmert piove un'inchiesta 'scomoda' sull'acquisto di una casa a Gerusalemme.

Il ministero della Giustizia israeliano ha ordinato alla polizia di aprire un'inchiesta sull'acquisto di un appartamento a Gerusalemme da parte del primo ministro.
Il revisore statale israeliano, un organismo di controllo del governo, aveva già svolto indagini sulle voci che Olmert avesse acquistato la casa in Cremieux Street a un prezzo notevolmente inferiore al valore di mercato, alimentando i sospetti di frode e corruzione.

Per Olmert questa rischia di essere solo il primo guaio con la giustizia: un'altra inchiesta potrebbe ben presto essere aperta per presunti favoritismi da parte del premier alla società del suo vecchio amico Uri Messer: una storia di appalti del ministero dell'Industria e del Lavoro.

Lindenstrauss over the weekend submitted the draft report reviewing the purchase of the Cremieux Street garden apartment to Olmert and to several high-ranking officials in Jerusalem's city hall, who were also asked to deliver their responses by the end of February.

About a year ago, investigative reporter Yoav Itzhak revealed that Olmert purchased the home for $1.2 million, a price that Itzhak claimed was $320,000 lower that the market value of the apartment.

Olmert served as mayor of Jerusalem between 1993 and 2003, and is suspected of foul play in arranging permits for the building.

The apartment in question is part of a templar building designated for preservation, and according to the suspicions, Olmert's associates helped the construction firm that refurbished the home on Cremieux Street in gaining irregular permits from the Jerusalem Municipality, which significantly increased the company's profits in the project. More specifically, the approved area for construction at the site was 350 square meters and the permits increased it to 750 square meters.

This is the second real estate deal for which Olmert is being investigated by the state comptroller. In a special report in March, Lindenstrauss concluded that a deal in which Olmert sold his apartment on Kaf Tet November Street in Jerusalem to American billionaire Daniel Abrams for $2.69 million, and continued to reside there for a monthly rent of $2,250, "was reasonable."

The State Comptroller's Office confirmed that the draft was submitted to the prime minister and the city hall officials. The comptroller also said there was an embargo on the report's details and findings.

Israel's attorney general has ordered a new criminal investigation into political appointments made by Ehud Olmert, the prime minister, when he was trade minister.

It is the latest in a series of allegations against the Israeli leader.

The state comptroller, a political watchdog agency, has alleged that Olmert steered a government grant to a friend in 2001.

Olmert's office swiftly denied the allegations in a statement: "These are unnecessary investigations. It's clear beyond any doubt that the investigation will yield nothing."

Corruption allegations

The prime minister has been dogged by corruption allegations throughout his 30 year career in politics, but has never been convicted of any wrongdoing.

Last week, he was twice interrogated by police on suspicion he tried to rig the sale of Israel's second-largest bank in favour of two associates while he was finance minister.

He also is suspected of buying a Jerusalem home from a real estate developer at a substantial discount in return for helping the builder obtain construction permits from Jerusalem authorities.

Olmert has dismissed the various investigations as a political witch hunt.

But the probes have threatened to undermine him just as his public approval ratings have begun to rebound after last year's inconclusive war in Lebanon.

Arafat forse non era più terrorista ( forse ) ma aveva accumulato venti miliardi di dollari facendo anche affari con gli israeliani . Tra l'altro vendeva loro il cemento per costruire il muro che separa i due paesi . Poi andava in giro per protestare contro la costruzione del muro.
