Ottawa-based Zoom Airlines has received approval to operate flights between Canada and Italy.
The Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities said Tuesday that it has designated Zoom Airlines to operate scheduled international air services between the two countries.
"This increase in scheduled air services is a great example of growth in the airline industry and of the Canada-European Union bilateral market," said Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon in a statement.
Zoom Airlines vice-president of sales and marketing Dave Clements told the OBJ that the company was planning at least one direct flight from Toronto and from Montreal, and perhaps one flight from Toronto via Montreal, although he said he could not be specific on the number of flights planned.
"We're looking at Rome, but we still have a few more hoops to jump through to get clearance," said Mr. Clements. "We're planning for the flights to start in the summertime, and are hoping that tickets will be able to go on sale fairly shortly."
Zoom Airlines currently services five destinations in the United Kingdom from Canada, along with air service to Paris, and Mr. Clement said Italy had been the "next one on the radar."
He said there were no initial plans to fly out of Ottawa.
