Russian Navy begins exercises in the Atlantic

A Russian naval task force started exercises in the northern Atlantic on Monday, a Navy spokesman said.

The task force, consisting of the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, the Udaloy-Class destroyers Admiral Levchenko and Admiral Chabanenko, as well as auxiliary vessels, is currently on a two-month tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic.

The flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva guided missile cruiser, joined up with Russian naval warships in the Mediterranean on Friday to participate in the current maneuvers.

"During the exercise, the Moskva guided missile cruiser will conduct live fire practice at dummy airborne and sea targets," Igor Drygalo said.

Russian warships will also practice interoperability with naval aviation and strategic bombers for several days.

The operation is the first large-scale Russian Navy exercise in the Atlantic for the past 15 years. All the combat ships and aircraft involved are carrying a full combat ammunition load, the Navy official said.

The Commander of Russia's Northern Fleet Vice-Admiral Nikolai Maksimov, who is heading the task force, earlier said that the current tour of duty to the Mediterranean, which started on December 5, was aimed at ensuring Russia's naval presence "in key operational areas of the world's oceans" and establishing conditions for secure Russian maritime navigation.

Russian missile cruiser hits all test targets in Atlantic

The flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva guided-missile cruiser, has successfully hit designated targets as part of a Navy exercise in the northern Atlantic Monday, a Navy spokesman said.

A Joint Naval Task Force, comprised of the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, the Udaloy-Class destroyers Admiral Levchenko and Admiral Chabanenko, as well as auxiliary vessels, is currently on a two-month tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic.

"The missile system used for the launches has no match in performance terms," Capt. 1st Rank Igor Dygalo, an aide to the Navy commander, said.

The Moskva cruiser joined up with Russian warships in the Mediterranean on Friday to participate in ongoing maneuvers, including live missile launches against airborne and seaborne targets.

Russian warships will also practice interoperability with naval aviation and strategic bombers for several days.

The operation is the first large-scale Russian Navy exercise in the Atlantic for 15 years. All the warships and aircraft involved are carrying full combat ammunition loads, the Navy said.

Russian strategic bombers join naval exercise in the Atlantic

Two Russian strategic bombers will participate Tuesday in a joint naval exercise currently underway in the northern Atlantic, an Air Force spokesman said.

"Two Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bombers flew on Tuesday to the exercise area in the Bay of Biscay to practice interoperability [with naval forces] and tactical missile launches," Colonel Alexander Drobyshevsky said.

According to the official, the number of strategic aircraft involved in the exercise will be gradually increased starting Wednesday. The Tu-160 planes will be joined by Tu-95MS Bear and Tu-22M3 Backfire C strategic bombers, Il-78 Midas aerial tankers and A-50 Mainstay airborne early warning aircraft.

Russian Navy uses supersonic cruise missile to hit test target

The flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet has effectively engaged a designated target with a supersonic cruise missile as part of a Navy exercise in the northern Atlantic, a Navy spokesman said Tuesday.

The Moskva guided-missile cruiser launched the P-500 Bazalt (NATO reporting name SS-N-12 Sandbox), a liquid-propellant supersonic cruise missile, last used in 2003.

The P-500 Bazalt, which entered service in 1973, has a 550 km range and a payload of 1,000 kg, enabling it to carry a 350 kT nuclear or a 950kg semi-armor-piercing high explosive warhead.

    RAF jets monitor Russian bombers

RAF Tornado fighters were scrambled after two long-range Russian "Blackjack" bombers were spotted approaching British airspace, the Ministry of Defence said.

The two strategic Tu-160 bombers were escorted by British and Norwegian fighters as they headed south for the Bay of Biscay where the Russian Navy is currently conducting a major exercise.

An MoD spokesman said it was a "routine" response by the RAF fighters to the presence of the Russian aircraft.

"When military aircraft are around, we monitor them," the spokesman said.

The latest incident follows the resumption last summer of long-range bomber patrols by the Russians, which has seen RAF fighters scrambled on a number of occasions.

The flights have been seen as indication of the current tensions between Russia and the West, particularly Britain.

Last week, the Government was forced to close the offices of the British Council cultural organisation in St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg following what was described as a "campaign of intimidation" against staff by the Russian authorities.

The incident was the latest flare-up in the long-running row over Britain's demand for the extradition of ex KGB officer Andrei Lugovoy, who is wanted for the murder in London of his fellow ex-KGB officer, Alexander Litvinenko.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband branded the Russian action "reprehensible", saying it was reminiscent of the days of the Cold War.

Over 40 Russian planes to take part in naval drills in Atlantic

Over 40 aircraft of Russia's Air Force will take part in the final stage of a naval exercise in the Atlantic later this month, an aide to the Air Force commander said on Thursday.

"The Air Force will play an active role in the final stage of the naval task force exercises. Over 40 planes will be employed from January 28 to February 1," Alexander Drobyshevsky said.

He said Tu-160 Blackjacks, Tu-95MS Bears, Tu-22M3 Backfire C strategic bombers, A-50 Mainstay airborne early warning aircraft, Il-78 Midas aerial tankers, MiG-31 Foxhound long-range interceptors and Su-27 Flanker frontline fighter aircraft will participate in the drills.

"During the exercises, pilots will practice reconnaissance, missile and bomb strikes on the [theoretical] enemy's naval task force, and will conduct air fights and air patrolling," Drobyshevsky said.

Russia's naval task force, comprising the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, the Udaloy-Class destroyers Admiral Levchenko and Admiral Chabanenko, as well as auxiliary vessels, is currently on a two-month tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic.

Joint Russian-French naval exercise starts in Atlantic

A joint Russian-French naval exercise has started in the northeastern Atlantic, a Russian Navy spokesman said.

Russia is represented by the Admiral Chabanenko destroyer, a member of the Russian task force, which is currently on a two-month tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic, while France is represented by the Tourville frigate.

The Russian task force, led by the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier and also comprising the Udaloy-Class destroyer Admiral Levchenko, has been joined by the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva guided missile cruiser, in the current maneuvers.

Captain First Rank Igor Dygalo said the joint exercise - PASSEX (Passing Exercise) - would lead to a better understanding between the two countries' navies, adding that, "The cooperation between the ships of the two fleets...will lead to a higher level of mutual understanding and trust while performing joint security missions at sea."

The Russian warships, which have already conducted live fire practice, will also master interoperability with naval aviation and Tu-160 strategic bombers.
