l'italiano ha un tale culto per la furbizia che arriva persino all'ammirazione di chi se ne serve a suo danno.

Another Counterfeit Interview: Gore Vidal
Posted by Judith Thurman
In this week’s Talk of the Town, I reported that Tommaso Debenedetti, a freelance Italian journalist, had fabricated interviews with Philip Roth and John Grisham in which he attributed anti-Obama sentiments to both of them. The Roth interview was published in an Italian tabloid, Libero, and the Grisham interviews in two conservative newspapers, Il Resto del Carlino and La Nazione, and one with centrist politics, Il Giorno. I was curious to know what other mischief Debenedetti might have been up to, and I discovered that he had also published an interview with Gore Vidal in the Italian news weekly L’Espresso. Vidal, who lived in Italy for decades, reads and speaks Italian fluently. It seemed implausible that Debenedetti would have had the nerve to invent a long Q. & A. with him, but it also seemed unlikely that a prominent journal like L’Espresso would have run the piece without any fact-checking. Nope. This afternoon, I reached Gore Vidal, by telephone, in Los Angeles. He had never heard of Debenedetti, he told me, adding that he would have been less surprised to discover that an American journalist, rather than a European one, had perpetrated such a hoax. (I also tried to reach L’Espresso for comment, but it was too late in Italy and there was no answer at their U.S. office.) In the meantime, I am checking to see if an interview by Benedetti with last year’s Nobel Laureate in Literature, Herta Müller, that was published in Il Piccolo, a progressive newspaper with headquarters in Trieste, is another instance of his creativity. Stay tuned. And if you’re aware of other suspicious interviews by Debenedetti, please e-mail us.
UPDATE (April 1, 11 A.M.): Antonio Carlucci, the New York correspondent for L’Espresso, tells us that “L’Espresso never published an interview by Gore Vidal with Tomasso Debenedetti.” The counterfeit interview, he said, appeared in Il Piccolo, a Trieste newspaper owned by the same company as L’Espresso, which is why the interview could be found on the newsweekly’s Web site. In any case, the Debenedetti-Vidal exchange has been taken down.
“I would like to add that L’Espresso was very pleased to interview in the past Gore Vidal,” Mr. Carlucci added, “not by phone but face to face at his
home in southern Italy.”

More Counterfeit Interviews

Yesterday, I posted a followup to my Talk of the Town story in this week’s issue about the literary hoaxes perpetrated by Tommaso Debenedetti, a freelance journalist based in Rome who fabricated interviews with Philip Roth and John Grisham. I had uncovered a third fabrication—a fake interview with Gore Vidal.
Last night, in the online archives of Il Piccolo, a local paper published in Trieste where the Vidal Q. & A. first appeared, I found more than twenty additional interviews under Debenedetti’s byline purporting to be conversations by telephone or in person with some of the most eminent figures in world literature. The earliest was from 2006; the most recent was published last month. More than half of his subjects were Nobel laureates.
I began contacting these writers and their representatives. As of this afternoon:
Toni Morrison denies ever having spoken to Debenedetti.
E. L. Doctorow told me that the language and, in particular, the imagery, attributed to him are “impossible.”
Philip Roth was amused to hear that Debenedetti had published a second interview with him, from 2009.
Gunter Grass “has a good memory,” his German editor, Helmut Frielinghaus, told me by e-mail, yet he cannot recall Debenedetti. And Frielinghaus reads all of Grass’s interviews but never saw this one before.
Nadine Gordimer, according to her literary agent, could not recognize her own voice.
The wife of Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio told me that it was “extremely improbable” that her husband had ever spoken with Debenedetti or expressed the opinions attributed to him. (Le Clézio was alleged to have deplored the proposed French ban on the burqa in public buildings.) “It sounds crazy,” she said.
A publicist for Herta Müller said that the reclusive Romanian-born writer almost never speaks to journalists, and certainly did not give an interview to Debenedetti.
A. B. Yehoshua and Scott Turow had no recollection of Debenedetti, but they and others are double-checking their records. Also in the archives are V. S. Naipaul, José Saramago, J. M. Coetzee, Wilbur Smith, Meir Shalev, Amos Oz, Elie Wiesel, and the Iranian lawyer and human-rights activist Shirin Ebadi.
