On May 13 President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko gave an interview to Reuters, one of the largest international news agencies.
The Belarusian head of state had an interview with Reuters slightly more than a year ago, said the press service of the President of Belarus. This is why the new interview focused on changes regarding the domestic and international life of the republic, its growing attractiveness for foreign investors and development prospects for the next few years.
The President shared his vision of future integration with the Russian Federation and relations between the two countries in view of the changes in Russian leadership.
The talk also touched upon forthcoming parliamentary elections in Belarus, participation of opposition politicians in the elections and a possible intention of Alexander Lukashenko to run for the presidency again.
Speaking about ways to further improve Belarus’ relations with the European Union, Alexander Lukashenko stressed, “You should ask the European Union about it, not me. We are ready to accompany you along any way in order to improve our relations. There is one option: you should see us as partners, as a sovereign and independent state. From this point of view we are ready to build relations with you”.
Speaking about relations with the USA, the head of state said, “Belarus absolutely doesn’t force any processes, including the worsening of relations with the USA. If the USA thinks about building relations with us using force and sanctions, then we don’t need such diplomats and relations. If the USA wants to see us as an independent sovereign state and use these principles to build the relations, we will open both the soul and the country. But the USA should understand that we are an independent sovereign state. We will not allow Americans to act here the way they want to”.
“No need to scare us with sanctions, we will survive. We don’t have much US money, which exodus may destroy our economy. Our economy is not committed to one state at all,” added Alexander Lukashenko.
