Political parties to participate in forthcoming elections more actively
25.06.2008 13:49
The parliamentary election campaign that just started in Belarus will be more open than the previous one, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidia Yermoshina said after the CEC session.
According to her, no significant changes in the elections legislation occurred, “but the political tone of the campaign might be different.” The elections will be more open not because of the great number of observers, (Belarus has always had the highest density of international observers in the CIS”, but because of a greater representation of different political parties that adhere to different views, Lidia Yermoshina said. She thinks that this parliamentary campaign will see a greater number of representatives of different political parties both in the election commissions and among the candidates for the House of Representatives.
The CEC head also noted that after having talked to the deputies of the current convocation, she “had an impression that only a third part of the parliamentarians plan to run for the seats in the National Assembly of the fourth convocation.” “However, their plans can change; this is why it is hard to project anything. Everything depends on how strong their challengers will be,” she added.

The parliamentary elections in Belarus will be held in an open and democratic way, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said in an interview to Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
“We want the elections to be held in an open and democratic way, so that nobody would be able to criticize us,” the Belarusian head of state underlined.
“We want to show western countries and Russia how elections should be organized. We will make them so democratic that you will see practically whom the Belarusian people really support,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
The President noted that the Central Election Commission is responsible for holding parliamentary elections which should be organized in strict compliance with the Belarusian legislation. The first international observers are already in Belarus, and nobody will prevent them from working provided that they do not break the Belarusian law, the head of state noted.
