Leslie Eaton writes in the WSJ that volunteers are filling in where there are shortfalls:

"Let's start cutting stupid programs that cost taxpayers a pot of money," says Tim Austin, a 48-year-old former home builder now looking for a new line of work. "It's so bullying and disrespectful to take money from one man's pocket and put it in another's."
Such sentiments, which might draw cheers at a tea-party rally, are pretty much a mainstream view here in the state's second-largest city, the birthplace of Colorado's small-government movement.

Almost a decade ago, voters imposed strict limits on how much the city government can spend. Last November they turned thumbs down on a property-tax increase, despite warnings from city officials about a projected $28 million shortfall requiring at least a 10% cut in an already shrunken budget.

And so, faced with dwindling revenues, intransigent voters and widespread distrust of government, this city of 400,000 has embarked on a grand experiment: It is trying to get volunteers and the private sector to provide services the city can no longer afford.

Taxi drivers have been recruited to serve as a second set of eyes for stretched police patrols. Residents can pay $100 a year to adopt a street light. Volunteers are organizing to empty the garbage cans in 128 neighborhood parks. The city is asking private swimming programs to operate its pools, and one of the city's four community centers soon will be run by a church.

...Many people here say the proper role of government should be limited to paving streets, paying police and firefighters and, if there's money left over, frills like parks. Those are, in fact, the only projects for which Colorado Springs voters have been willing to approve tax increases in recent years.

che bel thread, vorrei più spesso parlare qui del mio amato Libertarian Party;

con me, caro Tolomeo, sfonda una porta aperta, io sono un nostalgico della "svolta liberista" radicale degli anni '90 che, mai mi stancherò di ricordarlo, portò il partito stabilmente sopra il 3% dei consensi;

su una cosa si sbaglia, non ci fu nulla di più "pannelliano" di quella svolta liberista, eppure i mezzi (umani) li avremmo ancora oggi;

basti pensare a Michele De Lucia, a Marco Beltrandi, ad Alessandro Massari, ad Alfredo Pauciulo, a Valeria Manieri...

D'accordissimo con Santiago, ma, ricordo a tutti, per me (tanto per fare riferimento a un altro bel thread di questo forum) la strada è il liberismo sociale di Cappato.

Io al momento mi trovo negli Stati Uniti e i libertari sono molto lontani dai radicali in materie di diritti civili poiche contano parecchio sul voto "conservative" (date un' occhiata al loro primo candidato di successo, Alex Joseph)...Certe tematiche sono comunque molto condivisibili, che dice Pannella sul possesso di armi?

Sono entrato qua proprio per aprire un thread a riguardo,a essendoci già questo pongo la mia domanda qui.
Coi Radicali (in teoria,se si guarda lo statuto) condivido molte cose. Il problema è che la dirigenza non riflette gli ideali liberali del partito. Non mi pare di aver sentito spesso Pannella parlare di economia e fisco (se l'ha fatto non si è notato). D'altronde non sa molto di economia,già il fatto che si definisca "liberale e socialista" è emblematico. Ritengo che sia anzianotto e debba anche ritirarsi. La Bonino un po'meglio,ma ancora non ci siamo. Staderini blatera contro la Chiesa (come tutto il partito) ma di discorsi in materia fiscale ne vedo pochi.
Se i Radicali decidono di dotarsi di una classe dirigente sinceramente liberista,potrei anche mettere la mia crocetta sul loro simbolo (o,turandomi montanellianamente il naso,su quello della lista nella quale si presentano) alle prossime politiche.

City recreation centers, indoor and outdoor pools, and a handful of museums will close for good March 31 unless they find private funding to stay open. Buses no longer run on evenings and weekends. The city won't pay for any street paving, relying instead on a regional authority that can meet only about 10 percent of the need.

"I guess we're going to find out what the tolerance level is for people," said businessman Chuck Fowler, who is helping lead a private task force brainstorming for city budget fixes. "It's a new day."

Sono sulla stessa linea in merito alla conquista di una cittadina pilota. Mettiamo in gioco uno Staderini e spendiamo cifre importanti per poi applicare cio in cui crediamo.

l'attuale posizione "sinistroide" dei radicali e di pannella mi ha sempre lasciato perplesso.. ma io sono un battitore libero.... e dentro i partiti non riesco a starci... le posizioni del libertarian party, talvolta sono ai limiti del fascismo...
