Rabbi Alexander Boroda, the head of Chabad’s Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, warned Friday that Jews would be endangered if Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has favored Chabad over other Jewish groups in Russia – allegedly in exchange for the support of Chabad-linked oligarchs and in exchange for Chabad’s pro-Putin anti-democracy advocacy in the West.
“The Jews of Russia must realize the dangers inherent in the possible collapse of the Putin government, understand the rules of the game and be aware of the limitations,” Boroda said during a talk at Moscow’s 9th annual Limmud FSU conference, the Jerusalem Post reported.
“In Russia,” Boroda continued, “there is virtually unlimited freedom of religion and the Jewish community must ensure this situation continues. The support for religious institutions is wider than in the United States and defense of Jews against manifestations of anti-Semitism is greater than in other European countries. We do not have the privilege of losing what we have achieved and the support of the government for the community…[all Jews, and especially those considering action against the Putin administration,] must understand the grave dangers that they take upon themselves and the potential consequences.”
Boroda failed to note Putin’s crackdowns against religions and religious leaders – including Jewish religious leaders – he does not control or approve of – including many who were forced to leave Russia.

Lazar-PutinChissà cosa pensano i rabbini ucraini delle prese di posizione di Berel Lazar, il rabbino Lubavich noto per la sua familiarità con Putin e che ha applaudito in maniera convinta all’annessione della Crimea alla Russia. Noto per aver dato nuovo slancio alle attività ebraiche nella Russia postcomunista, che ormai in gran parte si svolgono nell’ambito organizzativo del mondo Chabad, il rabbino Lazar (che si è formato a Milano) esprime con il suo comportamento un ben noto e direi tradizionale rapporto di appeasement fra la leadership ebraica e il potere politico.
Nei secoli e nei millenni, la massima talmudica “dinà demalkutà dinà” (la legge del regno è legge) ha non solo permesso agli ebrei di sopravvivere come minoranza in luoghi altrimenti inospitali, ma anche e soprattutto ha costituito l’essenza stessa del discorso politico ebraico nella diaspora. Certo, la figura di Lazar è particolarmente discussa, come sottolinea Batya Ungar-Sargon in un bell’articolo sul Tablet Magazine, e rimangono tutte da chiarire le dinamiche del suo rapporto con il nuovo Zar.
E certamente può urtare non poco l’idea che il riconoscimento anche istituzionale del ruolo Chabad in Russia sancisca dopo secoli la sconfitta definitiva (e storicamente ingiusta) del mondo dei Mitnagdìm, spazzati via prima dal comunismo staliniano e poi dal nazismo. I luoghi della loro cultura, le yeshivot non chassidiche, le loro comunità, sono state rimpiazzate dal chassidismo di ritorno, made in USA, che si è di fatto sostituito e sovrapposto alle tradizioni religiose locali. In Europa orientale sta avvenendo un generale fenomeno di assestamento che coinvolge pulsioni nazionaliste, imperialiste, etniche e religiose che è forse solo agli inizi, e la componente ebraica ha in questo contesto un ruolo non secondario.
La questione antisemita riemerge e viene ampiamente utilizzata a fini propagandistici anche da parti contrapposte, dimostrando tutta la sua forza di ideologia politica aggregante. E in questo contesto ogni presa di posizione pubblica della leadership ebraica viene letta e strumentalizzata di conseguenza. Forse sarebbe opportuno mantenere un certo riserbo in momenti così alti di tensione, ma è chiedere troppo alle leadership ebraiche che per definizione sono divise e spesso contrapposte. Di certo a Kiev non avranno preso bene tutta questa storia.
