According to a recent expert commentary, Russian reserves of military equipment are lower compared to what is said in the official versions.
Oleg Katkov, editor-in-chief of the “Defense Express” portal explained, that a part of the former Soviet equipment stored in the Russian Federation is unusable, so the data about “thousands of tanks stationed behind the Ural mountains” is nothing more than a myth.
“There are two aspects to the Soviet weaponry currently stored in reserve. That myth about thousands, tens of thousands of tanks standing behind the Ural mountains, was created back in the Soviet era, but is now extremely easy to verify using the Google Maps service,” said the expert.
Katkov noted that on the internet it is possible to find the precise coordinates of many secured military warehouses on the territory of the Russian Federation. Using these coordinates, it is possible to observe “a rather pleasant view of tanks without turrets” and other machines, through which “bushes and trees are already sprouting.”
The expert names Russia’s shadow export of military equipment as the second important reason for such an indeterminate situation with the armament of this country. It is however difficult to find out how much money the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation “laundered” in this way, since Russia has kept its expenses for state defense orders secret since 2020.
