Métal Noir Québécois – Black Metal fiero e tradizionale dal Canada francofono

La scena black metal del Québec (Canada francofono) è fra le migliori di tutto il mondo bianco di origine europea e cresce di anno in anno sempre più (come anche quella degli Usa): la bella particolarità dei gruppi québechiani è che sono quasi tutti identitari, sostengono sia la difesa della loro tradizione locale (e l’indipendenza dal Canada anglofono) che della razza bianca.
Merita sicuramente una discussione a parte...

Fra i gruppi migliori del “Métal Noir Québécois” si possono citare (in ordine sparso) senza alcun dubbio i seguenti: Frozen Shadows, Gris, Akitsa, Thesyre, Shade, Veneficium, Würm, Forteresse, Csejthe, Utlagr, Sorcier Des Glaces, Sombres Forêts, Brume d'Automne, Nordmen, Ur Falc'h, Monarque, Sui Caedere, Nacht und Nebel, Culte d'Ébola, Revier du Nord, Dark Wisdom, Teutates, Blutskrieg, Winterwitch, Supremacy, Fjörd, Dark Covenant (anche se questi ultimi fanno Epic Doom Metal, in perfetto stile primi Candlemass, per la precisione), ecc.
La musica è epica, malinconica ed a tratti depressiva, con atmosfere fredde e trascinanti, ritmi sia veloci che cadenzati: il suono è glaciale nella migliore tradizione norvegese, però lo stile è particolare e non si limita a copiare quello dei maestri norvegesi come primi Burzum, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Emperor, Immortal, Manes, Kvist ed affini; i testi parlano di libertà, eroismo, élitismo, onore, fedeltà alle radici del proprio territorio del Québec, della cultura del sangue e suolo, dell’antica tradizione pagana europea, ecc.
Insomma non ci sono i soliti volgari clichè beceramente anticristiani e satanici – tipici del proto/black metal anni ’80 con i pur validi Venom, Hellhammer, Sepultura, Sarcofago, Blasphemy, Profanatica, Von, Beherith fino ai Rotting Christ, ai Necromantia, ai Mayhem e alle migliaia di seguaci della scena finno-scandinava degli anni’90 e successivi, ecc. - che ormai hanno ampiamente rotto le scatole a mio giudizio.
Sia la musica che i testi esprimono l’attaccamento alle radici della cultura tradizionale: ecco perché apprezzo tanto la scena del Canada francofono (ma anche di quello anglofono, che ha Geimhre, Pagan Hellfire, Woods Of Ypres, Wolven Ancestry, Dark Forest ed altri gruppi altrettanto dotati di qualità).

Quebec is certainly one of the most unique places in all of North America. With its strong French European identity and literally millions of acres of dark, cold forests, it's the most natural place for a strong black metal scene to arise. And that's just what has happened. In fact, the province is producing a variety of very authentic BM acts that rival the very best of Norway and France.

Borgne hails from Switzerland and your old pal Dr. Mality was dumb enough to think they were from Quebec. Despite my stupidity, there's little doubt this band is really at the top of the black metal mountain. These guys have created a very creepy, dark, miasmic sound on "Entraves de l'Ame". It is a triumph of freezing low-tech atmosphere, creating music that sounds like it was recorded in a cabin in the middle of the woods surrounded by howling wolves. The song "Die Trying To Take The Rope Off" is an utter and absolute classic of pure, bitter, untainted black metal, right down to the fuzzy guitar, the hypnotic riffs and the inhuman harsh vocals. I can't recommend this album highly enough for those looking for truly dismal atmosphere in BM. "The Plague" and "Dark Mirror" are also fantastic examples of "evil forest" BM at its best.

Forteresse, true and authentic Quebecers, pursue a different path and is very successful at it. "Par Hauts Bois Et Vastes Plaines" features 7 huge melancholy epics of slow, sorrowful black metal, each with the same name as the album itself. This is not "raging" or "hellspawned" black metal, but rather immeasurably droning and atmospheric music conjuring feelings of an ancient time before the arrival of mankind. There are differences between the tracks, but the overall feeling is the same. The first song is inexpressibly sad and tragic.

That leaves Neiges et Noirceur. Although this band has their moments, they don't really measure up to what Borgne and Forteresse create. They don't seem to be quite sure of what kind of band they want to be, ranging from very folky metal to long, bleak soundscapes to fairly traditional low-fi BM with a strong French identity. There are compelling parts here, but it doesn't quite hang together as a whole, so my recommendation must stay with Borgne and Forteresse.

Hard to think of any American band playing black metal on the level of Borgne, they are as grim and TRUE as any band I can think of. Head north to Quebec and get ready to lose your soul...

Grazie a te...Ho iniziato il 3d concentrandomi sui gruppi Black Metal Franco-Canadesi del Québec, ai quali ho dedicato principalmente la discussione, ma poi l'ho estesa fino a parlare anche più in generale dei migliori gruppi Black Metal Nord-Americani cioè pure Anglo-Canadesi e Statunitensi (Vinland) nonchè quelli di lingua e cultura francese di Francia e Svizzera (i Paysage D'Hiver, come ho precisato, sono svizzeri tedeschi, però hanno il bel nome in francese...In ogni caso sono un gruppo meritevole di essere citato a prescindere, anche se purtroppo non possiedo nessun loro cd originale...dovrei rimediare eh!).
La scena del Black Metal Nord-Americano (Québec e Vinland) e Francese è molto buona, non ha nulla da invidiare a quella storica Finno-Scandinava (Norvegia, Svezia, Danimarca, Islanda e Finlandia) che pur adoro...
Davvero pregevole anche la vecchia e nuova scena Black Metal della Polonia e dell'Est Europa in generale, della Germania, della Grecia e dell'Italia stessa!
Buon ascolto comunque!
