New Committee defends and promotes implementation of Italian Minority Law
Turin 3/4/02

On Friday a Committee for defending and promoting the implementation of the Italian Law on minority languages will be officially presented in Udine.

'The treatment of minorities and the recognition of their rights indicate the level of democracy of a State: therefore, protecting a language and the rights of people who use it is a fundamental question of democracy, and dismissing it as a cultural issue can lead to discrimination'. This is only one of the reflections which have driven a group of persons and associations, involved in the promotion of Friulan language, to set up a Committee for defending and promoting the implementation of the Italian Law on minority languages, approved in 1999.

'It was born in order to watch over the implementation of Law n°482 in all the fields where it is in force', explains William Cisilino, President of the Ladin-Friulian Institute (Istitūt Ladin Furlan 'Pre Checo Placerean') and one of the founder members. The Committee also wants to support the official recognition of the work of professionals who are working in the key-fields of linguistic policy, such as translators, teachers and journalists. Furthermore, the aims are to work against any discriminatory action towards members of linguistic minorities, even taking legal action or appealing to international organisations.

The Committee was founded in the Friulan community, but is open to people and organisations from other minorities in Friuli-Venezia Giulia - where Slovene and local varieties of German are spoken - and, in perspective, to the rest of the Italian State.

In the last weeks, representatives of Friulan organisations, associations and media have joined the Committee. Some of the organisations are the Society of Friulian Philology (Socjetāt Filologjiche Furlane 'G.I. Ascoli'), the Information Association of Friulian Radio (Cooperative di Informazion Furlane–Radio Onde Furlane) and the Ladin-Friulian Institute (Istitūt Ladin Furlan 'Pre Checo Placerean'). The Slovene organisations 'Novi Mataiur', 'Beneške Korenine' and 'Matajur' are also part of the Committee. (EL/Marko)
