Pagan Grave Site Discovered
The pagan graves of four people were discovered at the Keldudalur farm in Skagafjördur, north Iceland, on Friday. The skeletons were found when construction workers were digging in the area, and they are believed to date from before the year 1000. “What we discovered is a pagan burial site where more than one person is buried,” says archaeologist Ragnheidur Traustadóttir. “This is an important find, as we very rarely find pagan sites.” So far, the bones of four people have been identified, as well as the bones of a horse and a dog. One of the skeletons is of a woman, aged between 30 and 45. Yesterday, a woman’s dress pin was found, with a carving of a dragon on it, as well as some well-preserved pearls. The excavations will continue this week and archaeologists will be digging in the surrounding area to see if there are any more remains to be found.
