EUOBSERVER / WARSAW - Some 81 per cent of Poles want a nation-wide referendum in order to adopt the European Constitution, according to a survey ordered by the Polish leading newspaper, Rzeczpospolita.

Only 13 percent of respondents would like to see the Polish parliament ratifying the EU constitutional treaty without consultation in a referendum, the survey showed when it was published on Saturday. A further 6 percent did not have an opinion on the issue.

The Sejm, the lower house of Parliament, is expected this week to deal with a deputies' motion aimed at holding a referendum on the EU Constitution in Poland. According to the Polish minister for Europe, Danuta Huebner, the issue is still open.

For the vast majority of Poles, the European Constitution must be improved on two important points: a reference to Christianity must be included, and the Quality Majority Voting (QMV) rules adopted at the Nice summit - to be introduced as from 2009 - must be changed.
